New Scents for Propane That Make Sense

Back to Blog List Page
A variety of new propane additives are currently being tested in laboratories to determine if the incumbent smell can be substituted by other unique but recognizable aromas.

Propane is a colorless and odorless gas, therefore an odorant, currently ethyl mercaptan, is added to allow for its detection. This smell resembles that of rotten eggs.

Regulations state that because propane is clean burning, producing negligible amounts of pollutants when properly consumed, the revised smells must comply with these regulations.

In order to begin implementation of the new scent options, focus groups have been selected all over the country to sniff out their favorites of the new scents.

Last year at this time we first mentioned this innovative idea in one of our blogs. This Fall is the expected time frame for the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to have selected and approved new additive odorants to offer for the 2014 upcoming heating season.

For the first few months of distribution, only three additional scents, not including the current rotten egg smell, will be provided to our customers depending on our customer’s preference.

Once the new scents have caught on, we will be adding up to a total of six new scent options for our customers to choose from for order on delivery.

Our goal is to have given our customers the ability to choose the scent that is most appealing to them instead of only providing one generic odorant for everyone.

Let’s be honest, not all scents are created equal!

Smell additives that have tested the highest in our polls so far include: “Old Fish”, “Sweaty Shoes”, and “Dead Skunk” so that our customers have a choice when it comes to propane smell. There may be different additive options for your AmeriGas Propane Exchange tanks when your BBQ, including but not limited to “Lime Fish”, “Honey Eggs”, and “Hickory Shoes”.
