National Forklift Safety Day, sponsored by the Industrial Truck Association, serves as a focal point for manufacturers to highlight the safe use of forklifts. This special day – scheduled for June 14, 2016 – provides an opportunity for the materials handling industry to enhance awareness of forklift safety practices and the importance of operator training.
Safety is our highest priority at AmeriGas as well as ensuring that your propane-powered forklifts run efficiently. Forklifts are the most common type of powered industrial truck and propane has become a leader in the industrial market. As with other propane appliances, propane-powered forklifts produce lower emissions, engage in higher productivity, and enjoy an abundant supply produced in the United States. These three factors support the safety and job satisfaction of forklift operators and businesses across the nation.
Safety of your propane-powered forklift is not just a one day task. Daily safety inspections and compliance with OSHA standards are very important. Here are 5 OSHA required and recommended practices for refueling LPG industrial trucks:
1. Do not refuel LPG-powered trucks in confined areas where LPG vapors could collect if a leak occurs.
2. Do not leave LPG-powered trucks near heat sources, stairways, exits, or other egress areas.
3. When parking LPG-powered trucks for a long period of time, turn the service valve off.
4. Only trained and authorized personnel should replace LPG containers.
5. Follow proper procedures for storing and handling liquid petroleum gas
Propane is clean burning and has no evaporative emissions, making it safe for indoor and outdoor services. Propane is the best option for a safe warehouse because refueling is quick and easy. With cylinder exchange there is little to no wait time, whereas with an electric forklift you may have to wait until the battery is charged to resume productivity. There are also a number of workforce safety and training guides specific to propane powered industrial trucks readily available to maximize safety and knowledge of your fuel.
Happy National Forklift Safety Day from AmeriGas!
